Community Mental Health

Introduction-

In collaboration with Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives, SATRA has diligently executed the Community Mental Health Program in the Darrang district of Assam. This initiative was undertaken to address the pressing mental health challenges prevalent in the region. Over the past year, our program has made significant strides in promoting mental health awareness, preventing mental illnesses, and providing early interventions. This report provides a comprehensive overview of our progress and the outcomes achieved during this period.

Our interventions, adhering to the bio-psychological model, have encompassed:

Objective-

The program’s core objectives have been: 

  • Enhancing mental health well-being.

  • Strengthening community support systems.

  • Empowering individuals to access mental health services.

  • Eradicating the stigma associated with mental health issues.

Biological-

Genetic, Disease, Injury, Hormones, Diet, Stressor, Exercises, Drugs, Toxins

Social Dimensions-

Family Dynamics, Environmental stressor, Upbringings, Peer, Poverty, Natural Disasters, Culture, Trauma, School, Neighbourhood, Media, Discrimination

Psychological-
Beliefs, Emotions, Resilience, Coping skills, Biases, Behaviour Attitude, Cognitive intelligence, Emotional intelligence

Project Implementation and Activities

Identification & Registration: 

Successfully registered 2,879 patients, including 688 new patients and 414 recovered patients. 

 

Mental Health Screening Camps: 

Organized 24 camps during the reporting year, attended by 1,334 patients seeking mental health support. 

 

Follow-up Visits: 

Conducted 15,120 follow-up visits by SATRA’s dedicated staff, ensuring continuous support for patients 

 

Counseling: 

Provided a total of 674 counseling sessions, including 364 sessions for family members and 310 sessions for patients. 

 

Livelihood Support:

Supported 50 individuals with livelihood assistance 

 

Caregiver Training: 

Trained 268 caregivers to enhance their ability to support their loved ones. 

 

Suicide Gate-keeper :

To protect suicide SATRA initiated promotion of 16 village volunteers as suicide gate kepeers

Outcome and Impact Assessment:

  • Increased Confidence: Enhanced confidence among community organizers.

  • Better Understanding: Improved understanding of mental illness within the community.

  • Empowerment: Citizens feel more empowered to address mental health issues.

  • Foundation for Change: Established a strong foundation for enduring change in the community's approach to mental health.

Conclusion-

SATRA’s Community Mental Health Program has made substantial progress in addressing mental health challenges in the Darrang district, despite the challenges faced. Our achievements and planned activities reflect our commitment to improving mental health support and services, ultimately enhancing the well-being of our community.
